A little about you……..

I’m a fugitive from reality, a dreamer. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been making up stories—some would call them lies—about anything that caught my fancy. When I learned to read, speculative fiction was my fare. Between my storytelling, my reading, and my various life experiences, I’ve become convinced that reality is highly overrated.

A little about your writing……..

I’m a genre bender, blending fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, romance, and a few other things. Not necessarily all in one book, mind you. I like to write the way people talk. To me, it’s so much more accessible.

What inspired you to write?

I think I’ve always wanted to be a writer, though I didn’t know it when I was young (I was an aspiring concert pianist). I did write short stories, though, off and on. One of them won a contest when I was in elementary school. Later, I even submitted some of these stories to various publications, but was turned down—which was probably a good thing. But really, the real inspiration came when I fell ill for a month. Bored to death while I was recuperating, I started writing a story, that with the encouragement of a good friend, became my first book, The Underground.

What is your favorite book, ever?

That would have to be The Anubis Gates, by Tim Powers. A college professor whose specialty was Samuel Taylor Coleridge accidentally finds himself, through the auspices of an evil millionaire’s machinations, trapped in early 19th century London. A great book, incredibly imaginative.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you can give, and why?

Write, write, write to hone your craft. Only through consistent writing can you find your voice, and become a better writer.  Can I give another piece of advice? Develop a thick skin. You will be turned down by agents and publishing houses. Don’t take it personally.

If you were a dragon, what kind of dragon would you be?

A lung, a Chinese dragon.
